Xero VAT submissions not working!!!

Anyone know why ? (What a day for it to go wrong)

Didn't find your answer?

We've tried to submit 4 VAT Returns via Xero today which have all failed saying that the HMRC login details are wrong, which they're not. 2 Xero clients have also contacted us to say they're having this issue.

Is anyone else? What do we do?  Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Sorry for a stupid question, have they registered for MTD and is it turned on. If they haven't and it is on then it will fail or if they have and its not turned on again it will fail.

Not necessarily helpful but I have filed two (non MTD) today with no problems.

One of my clients submitted a vat return (MTD) at 15.41 today and I am unaware of any scheduled downtime on submissions. There is some down time at the weekend, but not on submissions.

I recommend that people keep a bridging option going as it is always possible to use bridging as a backstop.

I have personally filed a MTD return and a non MTD return today successfully on Xero.
I know my firm has filed at least six returns today on Xero and I have heard nothing from my clients.

Have you sorted the problem?

Have you asked Xero to look into it for you?

That's what I would do.

Xero says its going to take 12 hours to respond. That's too long. Filing deadline was the 7th.

Gary Turner

May know if there had been a flood or a trickle of Xero users raising a concern that VAT filing had failed.

Presumably not isolated to 7th May.

The resolution and explanation for the problem would be published in good time.

There appears to be a set of permutations proffered by AWEB contributors...but nothing definitive.

The downside in time stress and worry for accountants when they have to discuss the failed VAT filing with clients is not to be understated.

"I really should " posted his query at 1pm
Hopefully a good night's sleep was enjoyed by all.

What is the explanation for the failed VAT filing?

Kept trying throughout yesterday and finally they went through about 16:15, so advised clients to retry and theirs went through fine. All were non-MTD.

@Gary - yes, I believe that we did TRY to contact Xero and still haven’t had a response (although TBF I’m not in the office today so they may have responded today ie too late).

@Gary - what was the issue? A little FYI line on the Xero forum / blog would have been helpful, rather than me flapping, pleading for help on AW and pray to the tech Gods all afternoon.

Thanks all.

Xero MTD is far from smooth. Submitted 4 returns in last three days, none went through at first attempt. For one return, no Receipt ID was generated. Checked with HMRC today and they did receive it though.

It is worth finding out how you can use different API software to look up what the situation is. For example you can use some bridging software to find out if you have successfully submitted returns using a cloud accounting system. That is done by swapping the Open Authorization.

And still not working, and yes contact Xero support and there answer is "have you tried another browser".
Yes of course we have, and yes we know how to clear caches, and then and only then do they say "we are aware of a problem and out technical team are working on it"

Really unimpressed with Xero support, and always have been. Yes I can file using bridging software, but that is hardly the point Xero should work.

There are some wider issues with submissions at the moment. This might not be Xeros fault if they are having 500 errors.

(500 is an error number indicating a software problem with HMRC)

Thanks John

However one of the problems is that we don't even get an error message which would enable us to pin it down.
Every other software appears to be working currently so it does not appear to be an HMRC problem, have filed QB, Sage and Kashflow in the last 48 hrs.

Its a problem that only occurs on certain accounts. If you want me to run diagnostics I can do that during the working week if you email me [email protected]

It relates to accounts with numeric period keys and it is almost certainly the period key 0619. MTD software, however, is not supposed to tell you the period key (don't know why), but I can find it out if I run diagnostics.

This is what HMRC said in the email to developers yesterday:

Internal server error

We are aware that today some customers have been experiencing an issue with submitting their MTD VAT returns. Customers impacted received an ‘Internal server error’ message. This issue only impacted those customers with a numeric period key. We have been working to resolve this and a fix has now been applied. We are very sorry for any inconvenience this caused
