XML Gateway switch off - MTD exempt clients

XML Gateway switch off - MTD exempt clients

Didn't find your answer?

As i understand it - the Government Gateway (XML) is to be switched off in April 2021 and all VAT registered business's should file their VAT returns through MTD compliant software (or through their BusinessTax Account until mandated into MTD April 2022) - so what do those who are exempt from MTD do to file their VAT returns? File through their Business Tax Account? Given that some clients were exempt because they lack IT skills or because of age or techincal issiues with broadband connection - isn't this still going to be a problem?

I ask out of interest - we only have 1 VAT registered exempt client.

My understanding is all they are doing is back end stuff

your client will still be able to log in an punch in numbers as now.

but it seems software co's and HMRC too are using this as another "please please please buy software" plea. Poor hard up developers need some cash etc etc.

Oh aren't they just?!!

Xero and Freeagent appear to be the main culprits - with Freeagent the 'sign up for MTD now' box takes up a third of the opening screen, so much so that it's hard to avoid!!

Certainly does look that way. But the point still remains that the XML Gateway will be switched off at some point - what then for the exempt?

I don't follow.

If they are using software, then go MTD. ie same as now, different back end.
if they are not using software, they log into HMRC as now but with slightly different screens.

I am trying to file VAT return for non-MTD client via QBO since last night and still getting an error message that "user credentials are incorrect" despite the fact that nothing changed since the last quarter.

Can still however punch in the numbers on the HMRC portal and no issues with the login details. QBO are blaming HMRC and vice versa. Fun times.
