Comapny valuation qualifications

Comapny valuation qualifications

Didn't find your answer?

I'm ATT EA CTA IIT (Dip) and looking to increase my knowledge on the topic of valuing companies. Over the past few months I've had an unusually high amount of work come through involving valuing companies. I've therefore realised that this is an area I need to learn more about.

I understand that not having an accountancy qualification may hinder this, although I feel confident in my knowledge in this area. I just wondered if anyone knows of any qualifications for this, I've looked at a training course with ICAEW but wanted to knwo if anyones had any experience of any others or better ones? Thanks

I'm also ATT and CTA and do valuation work regularly. I have never felt my lack of an accounting qualification to be a hindrance here. A lot of valuation work is tax driven anyway. It's not an exact science you can just learn on a course, although there are courses out there, I learnt on the job. I think you just get a feel for it with experience and of course there's no right or wrong answer anyway. If you are uncertain maybe you could get someone to give you a review of your valuations until you get more experience/confidence?

There are no meaningful qualifications as such but various courses that can usefully be attended. It's not rocket science, and clear thinking takes one a very long way. I would have thought that not being an accountant would limit the amount of this type of work you might attract. But I say that as an accountant who has forgotten what it was like to be a non-accountant. If work referrers don't regard being an accountant as being an essential pre-requisite, so be it. I am not convinced that the fact that many valuations are themselves required for tax purposes is a reason why non-accountant tax specialists are safe to be let loose on them, if they are not safe to be let loose on other valuations.
