Wheeeee - it's penalty time again

Wheeeee - it's penalty time again

Didn't find your answer?

Usual spate of penalty notices received  today for the bad boys of 2013-14.

The statutory deadline for appealing is (or used to be) 30 days, although HMRC had discretion to extend it and (I have found) generally wielded that discretion generously. But the reverse of the penalty notices now shows that this has been extended to 05 October.

Is this a statutory change? (and if so, where?) Can we expect a harder line on appeals filed after 05 October, compared with their hitherto relaxed approach to the 30 day deadline?

With kind regards

Clint Westwood

.

Just had a discussion in our office about the letters, we had a about 5 show up in one envelope.

Assistant: Shall I email all of these about the penalties?

Me: Well we could, but everyone on that list has had at least 5 emails already from us about their tax return, plus minimum one phone call in Jan and one a formal letter in February pointing out they will get fined.

Assistant: One more cant hurt

Me: HMRC have also wrote to them several times.

Assistant: So what can we do?

Me: Same as they do. Nothing. File under "S" (ie shred)
