Companies House was closed and evacuated from 9am this morning after a suspected live shell was found in the car park.

Workers discovered the shell when carrying out digging work in the car park beside the headquarters building in Cardiff.

“Following work to the car park a suspected ordnance was discovered and as a precautionary measure, Companies House building at Crown Way, Cardiff has closed today and staff advised to return home, the government agency announced at 11.30am today.

“All our other offices and online services remain unaffected and customers should continue to use these as normal.

“Army Bomb Disposal Services have thankfully confirmed that the find was an empty casing and therefore presents no further danger and has now been removed from site.”

Other Companies House offices and all online services were unaffected, but the main office will not reopen until after the bank holiday weekend.

WalesOnline reported that the empty shell was a relic from World War II. The Companies House building is close to Maindy Barracks, which housed US troops in World Wars I and II.
