Premier profits hit by pickle blaze

Premier Foods, makers of foodstuff and beverage brands that include Branston Pickle, Typhoo Tea, Ambrosia Rice Pudding and Sun-Pat Peanut Butter, has revealed the extent of damage to sales caused by a fire at its sauce and pickle plant in Bury St Edmunds in October last year.

In a statement, the supplier of "ambient grocery products" said that while operating profits and margins are anticipated to be within the range of market expectations, The fire "effectively removed two [of the company's] most dynamic growth brands [Branston Pickle and the Lloyd Grossman sauce range] for the last 10 weeks of the year and as a consequence of these lost sales, we expect to show like-for-like grocery sales broadly flat."

The company added that it had also had to accommodate a "significant" rise in the cost...
