SA Online expected to save over £40m by 2011

The Government expects online filing of self assessment returns to produce savings of more than 14m in 2005/06, increasing to over 40m a year by 2011/12.

SNP chief whip Pete Wishart asked the chancellor if he would estimate the annual saving to the Exchequer of the introduction of (a) self-assessment tax returns and (b) online filing of self-assessment tax returns.

Paymaster general Dawn Primarolo replied: "Self Assessment was introduced in 1996 to modernise and simplify the assessment and payment processes. The new system also produced staff savings worth over 450m within the first four years. The success of the project was confirmed in an independent post-implementation review.
