My client with the extended spreadsheets has been preying on my mind. So much so that I decide to discuss it with Jack. He seems to know more about software than Henry does, and to be more switched on, not that this would be difficult.
"You're right, Alice," Jack tells me when I finish explaining the situation in detail. "It sounds like this client needs an alternative solution to his spreadsheets and it would be better for him to get used to using it early."
"Thanks, Jack. So what do we do next?"
"What do you think we should do next?"
"Explain in the covering letter that we send with his signed accounts, that MTD will soon be with us - explain what it is and that it means he will be obliged to keep his books digitally given that he is registered for VAT and his turnover is over the threshold - then invite him to come in for a demonstration and discussion of software packages that he could use, and show him Xero, FreeAgent, and Sage One."
Jack nods approvingly.
"I agree, Alice. Well done. Why don't you draft the letter and see what he says, and we'll take it from there."
I leave Jack's office feeling much better.
