Price of diesel restores my faith in free markets

Yesterday I noticed that the differential between diesel and petrol was only 2p , somewhat lower than the past few years. I recall reading back then that there was a shortage of refining capacity and that demand had leapt due to online shopping leading to a myriad of white vans trundling up and down the country. Well, they don't actually trundle but you get the idea.

Van sales had also risen , so the story checked out.

I often wondered how long the new refining capacity would take to come on stream.

Lo and behold we have an answer - supply and demand works and it is now £6 cheaper to brim my tank .

Petrol in Barnsley

Of course it has to be - the canny Yorkshireman wouldn't purchase otherwise , would he ?

There's not much that matches or perhaps beats a Scot (like me) for financial prudence

Diesel price

The cheapest I have seen is 112.7 at Sainsbury Leicester ,in addition to market pricing I think the supermarkets have a price war

cough!

I would prefer the price to go up so that less diesel is purchased, and so less particulates in the air buggering up my chest.

I guess really what's needed is to suppress the demand for diesel cars in the first place.

Complaints about diesel

I see your icon is Comrade in Chief Stalin .  You would have had no chance of such an objection to the system as one of his denizens . He would have had you committed to Siberia or shot you to death slowly , so count your blessings that you only have diesel particulates to contend with .

Until a petrol engine with the same qualities as diesel is invented you are stuck with it , dear comrade

Hampshire

Local Tesco is charging 114.9 for diesel and 116.9 for unleaded

The dash for diesel was spurred by New Labour and its obsession with Co2 reductions. Perhaps along with trashing our pensions, unrestricted immigration and financial meltdown we can add choking on diesel fumes to Labour's sorry legacy!

Labour legacy

So that's why my Tesco shares continue to languish - it is Tony Blair and Gordon Brown who are to blem. I knew it , I knew it....

Trabant

Perhaps Red Leader is relieved he does not have to contend with the Trabant, Wartburg or any of the other horrible polluting vehicles that could only be produced behind the iron curtain. No wonder they were looking for freedom as David Hasselhoff pointed out!
