The New Year is always the time to review the old and look forward to the new as we know and that means going through resolutions - past year and this - resolutions mostly of those not kept. So here is my list for the year with reasons why.

John (editor) wants a blog from me at least twice a month and an article at least once a month. Looking over the past years submissions I can see that I've let him down although I hope that the content has been informative. However I can see from the number of hits that at least someone has been looking at my words of wisdom!

Company Law Library

I need to update all articles under my Company Law section of the site (see here: https://www.accountingweb.co.uk/article/uk-company-law-library/547609) I'm way through. The text is still valid in all bar a couple of articles - its such things as the links that no longer working that need sorting.

Links to articles written

Every month I write at least one article for Tax Insider (two every other month) and they advertise on Accweb. So I'm going to draw members attention to any article I write for them that is advertised here (e.g. this month = New Dividend Rules - time to disincorporate?'

Blogging

Last autumn I attended a government funded course at a local college on the subject of blogging. They gave me some good insight and tips. I was worried that as I was paid for my article work that there would be copyright problems but if I just use my blog giving a resume of the actual article and direct to the actual article that will be OK apparently. That wont take long each month. I have put a continuing reminder on Rainlendar (the calendar software I use) to set aside every Friday for Accweb. Whether I will be able to keep that up remains to be seen. So far Jan is proving the usual hectic race towards 31 Jan

I've just finished a booklet on the new Dividend Allowance for Tax Insider which is to be published in the next couple of weeks - that is something that will be advertised on this site so I can announce that on my blog plus I can blow my trumpet a bit about it on my website and then the social media (not something I've really got into but needs must now I suppose!). My book '101 Property Tax Secrets' is out soon. I'll send a copy to all my landlord clients (another reminder on Rainlendar).

Article subjects - Property Tax

I notice that there are an increasing number of Any Answers questions being asked about Property Tax. This is an area about which John has been asking me to write for a while. So I'll need to make a list of headings.

My practice

Thats writing - now I've to look at my accounting practice. Its expanding well especially the Landlord side (a specialism of mine) but my website is a bit basic and not very informative. I emailed relevant clients about the new Landlord tax rules which went down well - text that needs to go on the website. I tried creating and sending a newsletter last year rather than buying one in (cant stand these - I think it shows that accountants dont care about their mix of clients). But however good the intention was, it didnt last. I gave up after 4 issues. I also need to put a more effective chasing of outstanding invoices system in place.

I have a client who is a Letting Management agency - I need to link up with him. Join the local Chamber of Commerce?

HMRC consultancy

One area I am going to concentrate more on is my HMRC consultancy work. Reason = call me sad but I find it interesting! They also seem to be taking notice of at least some of my suggestions. I write responses to Consultation papers on Accweb members behalf. After reading one HMRC's Digital Strategy dept made contact for advice as to what we as SME practitioners want to see onsite before the BETA issue. I met with a couple of their IT people last year.

Stressed Out

Not get stressed out with HMRC's employees when I ring them - its not their fault they've chosen what accountants perceive as a crap job.

Thats it... whether I do all this remains to be seen. 1st blog of the year - John!

Happy New Year!!
