Tax Returns and Nits

There’s an outbreak of nits at the girls’ school and both my daughters have it. I’m guessing just saying ‘nits’ has you scratching your head or neck or even the palms of your hand. It’s the effect the word ‘nits’ has on people, even if you’re miles away and on the other end of the phone. (That was my mum by the way, who blamed our conversation about nits for making her itch!)

I hate nits with a vengeance.

Although, nowadays there are lots of shampoos and medicines you can get. No more second guessing on how to kill those teeny tiny termites. I’ve also been cleaning their bedrooms, washing their bedsheets and towels and all the clothes they have come into contact with, several hundred times in the last two weeks. I’ve hoovered and dusted and scrubbed clean the house like never before. If you’ve never contemplated ‘Hinching’ and ‘Marie Kondo-ing’ your house, nits might make you change your mind.

On top of that I’ve been in the middle of tax return season.

Who needs sleep anyway?

To be honest, not to gloat or anything, but I have completed all the tax returns that I had to do and filed and made sure the tax has been paid. I’ve not sent out my invoices yet so that will be the next thing I need to do.

In between doing the tax returns, I started reading Della Hudson’s ‘The Numbers Business’ which is proving to be quite useful. I do wish I had this book 5 years ago when I had first started working for myself and was still eager and excited about working for myself. One of the things she writes about is streamlining processes and how using Xero was useful for that.

With MTD coming in, I do know I’ll need to transfer some clients onto ‘HMRC approved’ cloud accounting package which I keep putting off. I have had a look at quite a few packages but I think I will probably go with Xero, especially as I have used it before. However, Coutingup is in the process of making their app MTD compliant which in theory would make the app so useful but its not there, yet so I’ll see.

With nits and tax returns taking up my January, you’d think I’d have nothing else to talk about but I have also found out that my part time contract has been extended for a few more months. It was originally a one year maternity cover contract so I’m pleased it’s been extended a bit more but I do need to work on my writing if I want to keep extending it.

I’m looking forward to this weekend and hopefully some nit free, tax return worry free sleep!

Just to point out that MTD does NOT require the use of a cloud accounting package

No. I should have said it is my choice to do so but if I'm considering going cloud, I want to make sure its MTD compliant.
