The brilliance of cloud computing

I went to my mum’s house for the weekend but I had a little work left to do. I didn’t want to take my laptop so I created a shortcut on my ipad and checked that it worked and thought I’d do it on that when I had a little time. The ipad is brilliant for checking emails and so I didn’t really think there would be a problem. I only had 2 invoices to edit and send out. The ipad didn’t work – I think I have too many apps and not enough memory to update the ipad. I can’t even use facetime.

However, I had my mum’s laptop and I managed to do some work on that. All my work documents are saved on google drive and I can just login to the accounting software so the invoices were done within a few minutes, rather than the faffing around with the ipad or spending the weekend worrying about doing it. While I was on the laptop, I even did my husband’s VAT return. My own documents I save in dropbox and filing it online on the HMRC website is easy too. Although when I came home to look at the saved spreadsheet for the VAT return, I couldn’t find it so I’m not sure if I accidently saved it on my mum’s laptop instead. I’ll have to check (and delete it!) next time I’m at my mum’s house.

I remember when I first started auditing, we would lug around huge bags full of files and stationery each, although it had gone down to a laptop, a memory stick and possibly one file each by the time I left auditing. Now, I can imagine just needing a laptop, or if the client has spare computers, not even that. How easy must travelling on the tubes be now for auditors!

Deleting Files

Are you aware that just deleting a file does not remove it from the hard drive? To do this properly requires a file wiper or shredder of some sort. There are some good free ones on the market.
