Personal branding and awards

I love a bit of serendipity. This morning while looking for something else entirely, I came across a HBR article on re-branding yourself (March 2011) which amongst other strategies advised using social media to reintroduce yourself to your existing contacts. This triggered a frisson of guilt when I realised how long it’s been since I last blogged anywhere, but that’s another story.

Then 10 minutes ago, I read about the Finance Director/Expense Analysts One to Watch awards, for “rising stars of finance.”  I don’t think there’s a cash prize (maybe an attractive acrylic obelisk?) but winning or being shortlisted for one of these would really boost one’s professional profile. Particularly for management accountants, as the criteria for being a “FD to watch” is to combine the technical skills expected of a finance professional with business skills – a combination CIMA stress in our syllabus.  UK FDs only eligible for the One to Watch it seems, but it serves as a useful reminder to look for similar opportunities (although you’ll have to be very quick if you want to enter CIMA’s 2011 awards).
Don’t be shy/modest – there seems to be nothing to prevent you nominating yourself in most of these awards as long as you meet the criteria. Good luck – and post a reply if you win anything!
