Attended a CIMA training course yesterday on the new Companies Act. It was a good course but as the Act has been phased in over almost three years, with the final steps being enacted on 1st October 2009, I have had to research many items over this period. Whilst I did learn from the course, it was in areas I have not used and I would adopt the same research methods to any new area, so it made me pause to reflect on the benefit of compulsorily recording CPD.
My reasoning is that I would never give out advice without understanding any new legislation or topic and it would be irresponsible to do so. So if I don't know I have to find out. This is a matter of professional competence and CPD should automatically be inbred into all of us, otherwise we will become incompetent. So why record it? Can't think of any real reason beyond unnecessary beauraucracy.
