Search engine update refines results

One of the main criticisms aimed at the old AccountingWEB was its search function.

I’m sure many of you will have experienced frustration trying to unearth relevant articles or Any Answers questions, only to find the search engine retrieve an article from a decade ago.

But as our publisher Ben hinted last week, the days of scrolling past ancient articles to find recent content is over.

This week, the AccountingWEB development team has created a brand new search engine which produces more refined results. The advanced search engine throws out its net in exactly the same way, but the enhanced filters sieves unwanted content.

If you haven’t given it a go already, click on the magnify glass found on the top navigation. Say you have a sudden urge to look up IR35, type IR35 into the search box.

From this, the search engine lists all of the content since the dawn of AccountingWEB. So with the IR35 example, the first piece of content pulled in is from 2003.

Next to the search results you will find a number of filter options. You can categorise your results by:

  • Topic
  • Author
  • Content type
  • Year of publication
  • Brand

This new functionality allows you to easily find that Any Answers query you were after, or find that Simon Hurst Excel tutorial.

Using our IR35 example, if you click 2016, unsurprisingly, the top results are not from 2003, but 2016.

So, why don’t you give it a go -  It really works!

I'm not so sure - I still can't locate the discussion - What do you think of the forthcoming Xero price increases?
- which had 61 comments on when last seen, just before the change in site format.

Thanks for the feedback Paul. The Xero discussion was part of the site that didn't get migrated at the beginning of the month.

It's still stored in our database while we adapt the platform to support the slightly different functionality and format of the old discussions. That one is in the "next" tray for our developers, and I'm working on the outline spec for them at the moment.

We'll try to keep you updated about the likely timetable in future briefing notes about the improvement work.
