With Christmas almost upon us and Black Friday and Cyber Monday behind us perhaps it is time to consider the concepts of gifts and giving.

What is this years must have toy – child’s or adult – that will be discarded by March?

As The Fabulous Micky C says in his song “Hey Now! – a song trying to make sense of this weird world we inhabit -  “Everybody’s going doggone crazy for the latest piece of tat” www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WiE7rR3D7M

I have been asked by a number of people what I would like for Christmas this year. My answer, as it has been for many years, is that as I am no longer a child I do not want a present at all. In the past this has resulted in the receipt of unwanted tat on Christmas day which has made me angry on a number of levels – I am meant to show gratitude when what I feel is somewhere between contempt and exasperation,  for our consumer waste.

So this year when asked, I insisted that if anyone HAS to spend any money in my name that they make a donation to a refugee charity. The Christmas “giving” that my wife has got me into is distributing hot lunches to lonely and vulnerable people on Christmas Day before we as a family have our substantial Christmas lunch.

And of course giving to charity is TAX EFFICIENT. You can gift aid your donations but your present buying comes out of net income!

Go on! Give it a try.  Spend some of the money – not all of it – that you spend on unnecessary gifts on “giving” to a worthwhile cause.  Of course you should spoil your kids or your loved ones with gifts but draw a line - somewhere.  Go on - draw a line.

Merry Christmas
