According to perceived wisdom, over the past decade and beyond the finance leader’s role in their business has evolved from being ‘pure finance’ towards becoming a strategic partner across the whole organisation.
Instead of being cooped up with their spreadsheets in the corner office, technology has freed up the modern finance leader to roam the shop floor (be it real or virtual), analysing data and improving processes.
At least, this is what the gurus and thought leaders are saying. But is this really what’s happening on the ground, away from conference halls and the boardrooms of FTSE 100 companies?
While the majority of finance directors I speak with do acknowledge this shift, most are still so preoccupied with the day-to-day fog of war that is running their business’s finance function that they have little time to tinker with strategy.
