This year’s World Environment Day shines a spotlight on the urgent need for land restoration. Forests and grasslands are being annihilated, and the land's ability to support communities is being gravely compromised. In an industry that relies heavily on paper, accountants can lead by example in adopting sustainable practices.

By shifting towards more sustainable practices, firms will not only promote a healthier planet, but also improve their reputation. In recent years, businesses are increasingly looking to partner with other businesses that align with their values – a lot of which now include sustainability. So, by demonstrating your commitment to more eco-friendly practices, you’re in turn expanding your client pool.

Here are five actionable steps your firm can take to protect forests and contribute to a healthier planet.

1. Start using e-payslips

Switching to digital payslips can save a significant amount of paper each year. Think about it – if you have 50 payroll clients, and they have 20 staff each, that’s 1,000 pieces of paper (and that doesn’t even include envelopes or the cost of printer ink!) that you’d be saving each pay period.

To go a step further, you could use a payroll software that offers automatic payslip distribution, so you can save time as well as paper. Your team will appreciate the convenience, and you’ll be doing your bit for the environment.

2. Get rid of the notebooks

While notebooks, whiteboards and sticky notes are a great way to track what work your team is up to, they’re not the best for the environment. So, why not move your note-taking and weekly team tracking to the cloud instead?

Practice management software can eliminate physical notebooks and whiteboards by giving you full visibility in one place of what exactly your team are working on, at all times, from any location. Not only does this reduce your carbon footprint, but it also enhances collaboration, prevents bottlenecks, and streamlines your workflows.

3. Ditch the filing cabinets

Traditional filing cabinets consume a lot of space in the office, and at the end of the day, are essentially just drawers of paper. Transitioning to a cloud storage system allows you to not only store, but also share documents electronically, anywhere at any time. This not only saves trees, but it also provides better data security, is more GDPR-friendly, and lets you access files a lot more quickly.

4. Get documents e-signed in seconds

Many platforms now offer e-signature capabilities, allowing you to get forms signed online instantly. It means that you don’t have to travel halfway across the country for a handwritten signature. Also, you don’t have to set up an in-person meeting that ends up an hour long once there’s coffee and chats involved. So, by using e-signature tools, you can have forms signed online in seconds – it’s quick, secure, and eco-friendly alternative.

5. Encourage carpooling

Transportation is a significant contributor to carbon emissions. Encouraging carpooling among employees can reduce the number of vehicles on the road, leading to lower emissions and fuel consumption. Encourage carpooling in team meetings or even go a step further by making a rota so it doesn’t fall on one person. Discover more energy saving tips for your firm here.
