I am a child of the techno boom who grew up in the 90s during the golden age of technology. I have seen the dawn of the internet, mobile phones, smartphones and the growth of eBay and Amazon. Everyday something new comes out that is set to change my life. Yet still, not a single job that I have worked has been in sync with the zeitgeist. There has always been at least one fossil in a department, or even a whole department of relics who are still using outdated systems and processes that belong in the past. It is 2019 people, WAKE UP.

I am passionate about this because in this day and age, automation is a thing of the PRESENT, not the future. It’s here and has been for a long time and makes up so much of our lives already that we don’t even realise it. It makes zero sense to still be using manual processes and spreadsheets to carry out ANY, let alone everyday business tasks. When nearly every aspect of your life is automated or in the process of being automated, you become accustomed to a certain level of comfort and security which is simply not being provided by a lot of companies currently.

What’s my point? Two surveys were carried out recently with some startling statistics. The first, carried out on 2,742 HR and payroll professionals in medium to large size organizations found that, of these, only 33% are using on-premises systems to automate their payroll processes while a further 34% have moved to the cloud. 11% are using completely manual processes while the rest use a mix of tools and methods. But horrifyingly, the second survey of 217 UK HR and Payroll Managers in companies with more than 1,000 employees revealed that 52% of these were still using spreadsheets as part of their payroll process and a third of them still rely on paper-based timesheets!

Because companies have put payroll departments on the back burner and not invested as much money into their development, although reliable, they become outdated and disparate. But once businesses invest in transforming their HR initiatives (including payroll), they see a huge transformation in their HR functions. This can mean keeping their staff happy, developing and retaining talent and being seen as modern and “with the times”.

This is particularly true in the wake of the growing number of gig workers in the economy who make up a huge percentage of the modern workforce and who are usually part of younger generations. They rely heavily on employers who understands their needs and who will pay them on time with no errors. Manual systems are simply not cut out for this, and thus a revolution is necessary.

BrightPay is a payroll software that is the best of both worlds. You can ease the dinosaurs into the present day as they use a mixture of on-premise and cloud-based platforms to automate their payroll features. The software is so easy to use and even includes and employee self-service portal where employees can access their payslips and employment information, not to mention a smartphone app so employees can do all of this on the move. Simply check out the testimonials on their website from customers who have taken the red pill and woken up in the real world.
