More than half of tax agents regularly access HMRC's online services using their clients' credentials, according to HMRC research from last year.

HMRC
HMRC

An estimated 58% of agents occasionally sign into their clients’ online accounts, with 16% doing so frequently. This trend is driven by the limitations and inefficiencies within HMRC's agent services accounts, prompting agents to use clients' personal logins to complete tasks more efficiently.

In order to have better visibility of client data some agents log on to their clients’ government gateway accounts.

These high numbers indicate that HMRC’s current agent digital services do not meet agents’ needs for accessing client data. Key pain points identified include:

  • Inability to see which VAT returns have been submitted and what has been paid.
  • Lack of a single client dashboard.
  • Inability to see the same information as clients.
  • Multiple separate agent accounts with different login details.

Evidence suggests that larger agents are more affected by the lack of a single client dashboard due to their higher number of clients.

There’s too many different areas, you have to go in here and there…there’s no one place where you can see everything.

Suggested improvements in the report include:

  • Greater transparency of client information, including access to PTA details, P60 information, and VAT payments.
  • A single client dashboard within the ASA.
  • Faster updates to online data within HMRC accounts.

However, the report does not specify whether these suggestions will be adopted by HMRC or outline any further actions.

OpenTax

Recognising these pain points, Adsum developed OpenTax. This tool provides accountants with greater insight into the tax submission, verification, and payment status of their clients. Currently focused on VAT, OpenTax will soon encompass all business taxes within its dashboard. The goal is to bridge the information gap between client government gateways and agent services accounts for accountants.
