Bright prides itself on being an inclusive and supportive place to work and champions diversity, equity and inclusivity in everything we do. This year we were delighted to sponsor both the DEI and ESG Pride awards at the prestigious Accounting Excellence Awards that were held in the Roundhouse on 3 October.

We spoke to the AE Awards judges to see what they were looking for and what stood out from the shortlisted and winning entries.

DEI is good for your people, your clients and also good for business

There were some really excellent entries in this category, one thing that was evident in all the shortlisted finalists was the way they focussed on community outreach as well as running internal initiatives.

Whether that’s running apprenticeships, outreach programmes to local schools, supporting work experience and work placement. The finalists also support a wide range of diverse initiatives, such as women in coding, and working with local, national and international charities.

The shortlisted finalists had also looked at their own internal teams and processes, to ensure that they were doing everything they could to be a great place to work regardless of background.

The judges summing up said:

FD Works stood out as the winners of this category because they demonstrated, from leadership level and right through the organisation, how a DE&I strategy needs to be part of the culture. So that it is lived and breathed by the people in the business and built into the organisation’s processes.

FD Works took the time to understand the issues of the local community in order to access untapped talent pools, enable social mobility and attract employees from under-represented groups. While they acknowledged there were clear commercial benefits to the strategy, the judges felt they were driven as much by their passion for being a force for good as they were by the business benefits of their DE&I initiatives.

Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Pride Award

As well as the DEI category, we were delighted to sponsor the ESG award. Again this was hotly contested, it was amazing to see the efforts being made to genuinely make a difference both within their businesses and their clients.

There were a number of B-Corp firms that had passed the challenging hurdle to gain the coveted status. Most pleasing to see was the fact that the B-Corp accounting firms like Kung Fu Accounting, Thrive Accountants and more had worked with other accounting firms to help them gain the B-Corp certification themselves. A great example of collaboration in our profession.

All the finalists were making sure they were working towards or achieving Net-Zero status for themselves and their clients.

“Congratulations to Kreston Reeves, winners of AccountingWEB’s first ESG award in an incredibly hard-fought contest. “As one of the largest accounting firms to obtain B Corp status, Kreston Reeves has demonstrated that it recognises the need to balance profits with purpose.

The firm showed a clear understanding of the need to make a positive impact on the planet, society, and its stakeholders. “Kreston Reeves has embraced sustainability as a responsible business practice and extended their efforts to guide clients on their own sustainability journeys.

Their purpose-led approach, collaborative workshops, and surveys have ensured that their initiatives resonate with their people, fostering a sense of authenticity and engagement. “The judges highlighted their hope to see the firm implementing net zero services for their clients and showing larger practices they can play their part in saving the world.”

Congratulations to everyone who entered and particularly well done to all the shortlisted finalists and winners and highly commended entrants. If you’re doing great work in this space, why not enter the awards next year? We’re delighted to confirm that Bright will once again be sponsoring both of these categories in the 2024 Accounting Excellence Awards.
