Pride Month is an important time to recognise and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, and workplaces around the world are finding meaningful ways to honour this month. At Bright, we believe that inclusivity and diversity are not just values but integral parts of who we are as a company. This year, our Pride Month celebrations were both vibrant and educational, allowing us to come together in support of our LGBTQ+ colleagues and friends.

How we celebrated Pride at Bright

On Wednesday, 12th June, our office was a sea of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet as employees arrived in their most colourful attire and the office was decorated, creating a cheerful and welcoming atmosphere that set the tone for the day.

The highlight of the day was a talk by Karina from Pride at Work, who presented "Letters & Stripes" This engaging session helped us learn about the different LGBTQ+ flags and the communities they represent.

Karina's talk was incredibly informative, offering insights into evolving LGBTQ+ terminology and shedding light on the importance of pronouns. It was an eye-opening experience that deepened our understanding and fostered a more inclusive environment within our workplace.

Bright sponsors the DEI award at the Accounting Excellence awards

Our celebration of Pride Month is just one example of Bright's ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We are proud to be sponsoring the DEI award at the upcoming Accounting Excellence Awards for the second year in a row. This sponsorship reflects our dedication to recognising and promoting efforts that make the accounting industry more inclusive and equitable for everyone.

Last year’s winners

FD Works, last year’s AccountingWEB Pride DEI award winner, has integrated DEI into their firm by actively engaging with schools. They organise workshops and talks to guide students on careers in accountancy and finance.

Their commitment includes an outreach program targeting schools in disadvantaged areas, where they discuss various career paths such as finance, marketing, and apprenticeships. FD Works prioritises investment in apprenticeships, underscoring the importance of training and educational opportunities.

Bright’s Jonathan Stobart recently caught up on a call with AccountingWEB and some previous Accounting Excellence award winners. Below is what they had to say.

What impact has winning the award had on your firm?

Jonathan Gaunt, Founder and Managing Director of FD Works: “From our perspective, there’s a sense of pride in knowing what you’re doing is different and is right. I also think it’s great as it then gives you a reason to almost shout about it and sometimes, I think it becomes a matter of course in terms of well we’ve always done this, therefore you don’t think that you are doing anything great. So, the recognition is great for the team, great for the clients, and it gives you that bit of a gee-up of what are we going to do differently next year.”

What one tip would you give someone entering in 2024?

Jonathan Gaunt: “Be genuine.”

Bright’s Jonathan Stobart: "Get the owner of the business to write the application and then get a member of the team to write the application and compare and contrast. Because sometimes the experiences of the directors or the ambitions or perceptions of the owners of the business are different to those with their boots on the ground. And I think the standout application will be those that are able to articulate and demonstrate that the initiatives are firm-wide and not just words on a page."

Bright and DEI

At Bright, we are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and supported. By celebrating Pride Month and actively participating in DEI initiatives, we continue to build a culture of acceptance and belonging.

The deadline to enter this year's Accounting Excellence Awards has been extended until June 28th, so be sure to submit your entries!
