We’ve all seen the news, we've all heard the old wives’ tales: chewing garlic will stop the virus, shaving your beard will reduce the risk of transmission - It’s all balderdash. As the government is entering the second stage of preventative measures i.e. the DELAY stage, there are only three bits of advice that you should be heeding:

  • Wash your hands for 20 seconds regularly throughout the day
  • Don’t touch your face and
  • If possible, work from home!

Half of you are jumping for joy thinking of the lie-ins, the Eastender Omnibus, just you and the cat bro-ing it out in your PJs all day with endless cups of tea. But in reality, working from home can be a real nightmare for most people, especially when you don’t have the proper setup. It can throw everything out of sync and can actually set your work back rather than being a “day off”.

If you do need to work from home then what do you need to do your job effectively? Well if you are a payroll clerk or accountant then you only need a workspace, a comfortable chair, access to the internet and a PC. But what about access to the right payroll information? To important HR documents? Hopefully you are already using software that will make this process as seamless as possible and you will still have access to the information you need, or at least most of it!

If you don’t have a work laptop to bring home with you, the nerds at BrightPay have put together this really helpful infographic that will help you get back up and running and crunching those numbers in no time.

Yes, while all of your friends working from home will be going mad not having full functionality you will be sitting pretty. Don’t think of it as being stuck at home, think of it as doing your bit for your country while also having a bit of “you time”. Personally, I have a list of things to keep me occupied which, so far, consists of:

  • Watching the 135 episodes of Judge Judy recorded on my telebox.
  • Using the free time to do some workouts, crunching abs whilst crunching numbers.
  • Doing my damndest to avoid my partner and my cat at all costs - the cat in particular, she loves nothing more than treading/sleeping all over keyboards. (This also applies to children).
  • Trying not to drink every last bit of wine in my fridge. Wish me luck!

Remember to follow Public Health and WHO guidelines for self-isolation and if you are already a BrightPay Connect customer make sure to set up your users as we have now entered the DELAY phase. And as always, keep calm and carry on.
