What would you and your team prefer to be doing this summer other than CPD?

It can be difficult to persuade your team to spend time completing professional development, but it can be even more stressful as everyone tries to cram it all in towards their CPD deadlines.

One way to get motivated is to start doing a bit of evaluation. The halfway point of the year gives everyone a chance to reflect on what happened and allow a more focused plan for the goals they want achieve by December. Reflecting and properly planning means everyone chooses the CPD designed to improve their professional profile to help them with their roles and work better as a team, while also meeting longer-term goals. Looking at the bigger picture when thinking about CPD can really help motivate your team to get started.

What key skills do you think you and your team need to improve? And how can you improve your skills while still making time to enjoy the summer?

1. Plan ahead to have spare time

It's hard to get home, tired from work and get yourself motivated to do some CPD. Is there any time during your working day that you're able to fit in some CPD? Is there any time during your lunch break? Perhaps you could schedule an hour a week as company CPD time? The more everyone can do before they get home, the more time they will have to relax.

2. Break it down

Get your team thinking about what skills they should be improving and the CPD activities they can complete to help you improve those skills. If you break down what you should be focusing on, CPD becomes less “I need to do this before my deadline!” and more “I want to do this, because it will help me reach my career goals.”

3. Think of the consequences

Encourage your team to think ahead to their CPD declaration and consider what will happen if they don't take some CPD action now. Will you be rushed into completing last minute CPD that isn't relevant? On the other hand, if they take their time and complete relevant and useful CPD it will help them progress in their current roles.

The great thing about online learning is that it’s always ready when your team is ready. It's great for doing your CPD piece by piece and without a set start and finish time, it doesn't need to be done in one big go. Everyone in your team can work at a pace that suits their schedule and won’t use up all their time.
