Thanks to the burning of fossil fuels, carbon dioxide levels are 35% higher than they were. This is making dryer regions dryer and wetter regions wetter. It’s increasing the number of wildfires and the frequency and volatility of hurricanes. Glaciers are melting, the sea is rising, flooding is getting more and more extreme, and parts of Earth are becoming completely uninhabitable.

This is why climate change is one of the biggest priorities for countries across the globe, and why Horizon Europe is contributing over €15 billion of funding towards climate, energy and mobility R&D over the next 7 years.

What is Horizon Europe?

Horizon Europe is the EU’s research and innovation programme. It has a €95.5 billion pot of funding to support innovative projects and activities that fall within the following three pillars:

  • Pillar 1. Open Science
  • Pillar 2. Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness
  • Pillar 3. Open Innovation

Within pillar 2 “Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness” are 6 individual incentives called clusters:

  • Cluster 1: Health
  • Cluster 2: Culture, Creativity & Inclusive Society
  • Cluster 3: Civil Security for Society
  • Cluster 4: Digital, Industry & Space
  • Cluster 5: Climate, Energy & Mobility
  • Cluster 6: Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture & Environment

Each cluster has its own budget and specific objectives that support ‘global challenges and European industrial competitiveness’.

What is the climate, Energy and Mobility cluster & why is it a priority for innovation?

Cluster 5 “Climate, Energy & Mobility” has a budget of €15.35 billion to finance innovative climate change projects.

The main objective for this cluster is to fight climate change and make the energy and transport sectors environmentally friendly, safer and more resilient. To do this, Horizon Europe is encouraging companies based in the UK and across Europe to collaborate on innovative projects and activities to better understand the impact, causes, risks and opportunities surrounding climate change.

A byproduct of these collaborations and innovative projects is an increase in jobs and a faster transition to a greener planet.

Achieving the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels, requires huge leaps in innovation this decade.” – Innovate UK

What type of projects are they looking for?

Cluster 5 has six destinations that innovative projects and activities can fall into:

  1. Climate sciences and responses for the transformation towards climate neutrality
  2. Cross-sectoral solutions for the climate transition
  3. Sustainable, secure and competitive energy supply
  4. Efficient, sustainable and inclusive energy use
  5. Clean and competitive solutions for all transport modes
  6. Safe, Resilient Transport and Smart Mobility services for passengers and goods

And key areas of focus for these climate, energy and mobility projects include:

  • Climate change adaptation
  • Ecosystems
  • Pathways to climate neutrality
  • Renewable energy systems
  • Carbon capture
  • Batteries
  • Energy-efficient buildings
  • Smart and zero-emission transport
  • Safer mobility solutions
  • Green, fair and inclusive services targeted at cities and citizens

Benefits of applying for Horizon Europe funding

Cluster 5 is an excellent opportunity for UK companies to collaborate with world-leading organisations and enhance their capabilities, access cutting-edge technologies and infrastructure, and influence climate change standards and regulations.

It offers an exciting opening into new markets and supply chains and crucially enables companies to contribute to saving the planet.

How to apply for cluster 5 funding
