Hybrid working has transformed the way firms provide training. How can you make sure your team are well-versed in R&D tax relief and other specialist subjects?

Almost 3 years on from the first Covid lockdown, hybrid working has become a familiar concept for many desk-based workers. Accountancy firms are no exception, with most embracing the mix of benefits that come allowing staff to work part of the week at home, and part in the office.

One of the downsides is that this has disrupted the ways that firms provide training for their staff. Training days are much harder to organise, and junior staff have fewer opportunities to sit alongside and learn from senior colleagues. Lots of teams have created mentorship systems to help counterbalance this, but most firms are still adapting and finding new solutions. Specialist training, such as for R&D claims, can be particularly difficult to provide.

One of the best solutions to the challenge has been online training, and on-demand online training in particular.

Session-based online training, with an instructor presenting live, is a good option as staff can tune in from anywhere with a decent Wi-Fi connection. However, given how flexible we need to be to accommodate client work, that’s not always practical or easy to organise. And with specialist subjects, where only a small number of staff need the training, or it’s not predictable when the need for training will occur, there can be a difficulty with scheduling sessions that meet your firm’s needs and budget.

In these cases, a more appropriate solution is on-demand online training, based on courses rather than live presentations, which learners can access at their convenience. In today’s fragmented and busy world, it can be easier to learn in short bursts (when you have the time and energy) rather than having to do it when convenient for the instructor. It means no more scheduling headaches, and due to the scalability of on-demand courses, can be cheaper to buy too.

Our training courses on R&D tax relief training fit this model exactly, and for the many accountants among our members, it’s an ideal solution. As R&D tax relief comes under public and political pressure, and HMRC react, it’s more important than ever that your teams know exactly what they’re doing.

If you want to get a sense of what on-demand online training could look like for your team, you can take our free course An Introduction to R&D Tax Relief

And if you want to understand the range of options available to you and how our training and support fit in, we’ve created a free Guide to Support & Training for R&D Tax Relief Advisors. This gives you all the information you need to make an informed choice about which option is best for you – and what the costs are likely to be.
