An even greater reliance on finance and business Apps has been predicted for the year ahead, according to the latest report by the global provider of mobile data and analytics, AppAnnie.

‘The new normal in 2021: Five things you need to know in mobile’  takes a deep dive into how the world has turned to mobile to stay connected, entertained and informed in 2020 and how mobile usage sky-rocketed during the pandemic.  Mobile adoption is said to have accelerated by 2 to 3 years as consumers turned inward and mobile became their portal to the outside world.

App usage up 25% year on year

The time spent on mobile hit a new high with users spending on average 4 hours and 20 minutes per day on their mobile devices - up 20% from 2019. To put this in perspective, this represents over 25% of the average user’s daily waking hours.

This momentum continued with the overall time spent in Apps globally up 25% year on year and the report predicts that in 2021, Business Apps are poised to see a 4 year CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 57% in 2021.  They also saw the biggest growth in terms of time spent on them: up a staggering 200% with users spending greater time on them each day.

Top takeaways:

  • Total time in banking Apps is globally expected to surpass 31 billion hours annually on Android phones in 2021, representing a 4 year CAGR of 35%.
  • Downloads of Mobile Apps and games will approach 130 billion across iOS and Google Play globally
  • Time spent expected to top 3.3 trillion hours on Android phones in 2020

The report adds that there is likely to be continued strong growth in ‘at home’ mobile services into 2021 particularly as markets content with outbreaks and public confidence in containment until the eventual rollout of global effective vaccines.

Our take

This annual take on the state of mobile provides a steer on the role it is set to play in the year ahead and clearly shows a greater dependence on Business Apps as shown by a 200% increase in the time spent on them.  For accounting firms, having their own App is one of the most effective ways of getting important content, updates and insights directly into the palms of clients’ hands and the team doesn’t have to spend time writing a single word.

That’s where we come in as we are providing high level business content on a daily basis to 3000 firms globally that are using our App technology. Firms can demonstrate that they have the right content, tools and advanced communication methods in place to help business owners, whatever age they may be or whatever business they may run, become even more successful.
