You pick up any piece of accounting media at the moment, without being told that tech is the future, tech is the way forward, accountants are now app salesmen and your accountancy business is a tech business.  Well just in the way that Sky want us to believe that football was invented in 1992, when they won the rights contracts for the English Premier League.

Well funnily enough technology existed way before the current phase of cloud accounting.

If we look at technology, then we’ve had mainframes, Unix, PC DOS, followed by Windows taking over the world in 1992. Windows has gone through many versions and along the way we’ve had Year 2000, dot.com boom, ASP, SaaS, now known as Cloud and the release of many devices, such as the iPad and iPhone.

Throughout all of these enhancements to the computing world, we have accounting businesses that have adopted tech, as soon as it was available, those curious firms, who are aware and interested, but just waiting to see what will happen, those who adopt, when they have too and those who have no interest.

Just as today, we have firms in the UK, such as Farnell Clarke, d&t, GrowFactor to name just a few, who lead the way in terms of tech adoption, employee engagement and delivering a world class service. However, there are many that would have a heart attack if you told them that you could process client records, without any human involvement. Yes, that’s true, software can complete your client records, without any human involvement.

So where ever you are on your journey to being a smart digital practice, do not feel as though you are on your own, do not feel that you are the only person to undertake this.  There are thousands of firms going through this in the UK and there are tens of thousands that are going through this across the globe.  There always has been tech and there always will be tech and tech will always super cede itself.

The most important aspect of a move to becoming a smart digital practice is that you start by thinking how you can improve the customer experience.  What is not working well today, can you reduce the touchpoints that a client has, can you offer easier methods of payment, can you reduce the number of steps in a process?  Do not start by buying an app because someone at a regional institute meeting said product xxx is great.

Start with the end in mind is a well-worn self-development cliché, but I would amend that to start with thinking how you can improve client experience.  I know that customer experience will be the most hated corporate buzzword by the end of 2019, but I can’t think of a better way to describe an evolution to the digital world.
