The cost of living crisis has had a profound effect on small businesses already. Businesses that boomed under covid have now contracted after a testing Christmas period. Whatever the outcome of this year, there are going to be SME casualties.

Cash flow forecasting is one of the most important ways to mitigate the negative challenges this year poses. A positive cash flow ensures that SMEs are able to keep their lights on, and pay staff and suppliers while taking advantage of growth opportunities. On the other hand, having a negative cash flow can stop a business dead in its tracks. Cash flow is the engine of the business. A healthy cash flow ensures that companies can get from A to B on their terms.

On 24th January at 2:00pm, Dan Daly, Head of Advice and Helen Cockle, COO at Futrli by Sage discussed 10 common cash flow hurdles that SMEs face.

These issues included:

  • Lack of time
  • Access to resources
  • Conflicting priorities
  • Not understanding the benefits of forecasting
  • Ineffective cash flow forecasting methods
  • Static (and inflexible) predictions
  • Incomplete datasets
  • Inaccurate (or misleading) results
  • Human error

As SMEs enter a tough year, it is important for advisory-led accountancy firms to understand the anxieties and challenges SMEs face.
