A prominent British accountant was appointed chairman of RSA, the UK's largest commercial insurer and FTSE 100 company.

Martin Scicluna, former chairman of Deloitte, will become chair of the global insurance group in January.

Formed in 1996, the company owns the More Than car and home insurance brand.

Scicluna spent more than 30 years at Deloitte, serving as UK chairman from 1995 to 2007 and will replace current chairman John Napier at the helm of RSA, formerly known as Royal & Sun Alliance, next year.

"It is a privilege to be appointed as chairman of one of the world's largest international insurers. I look forward to joining the RSA team and working with my new colleagues," he said.

After leaving Deloitte, Scicluna built his experience in financial services by serving on the board of Lloyds Banking Group, owner of Scottish Widow.

He is also chairman of the Great Portland Estates, a property investment company.

RSA, which has a global presence, is seeking to expand to markets in Chile, Uruguay and the Middle East, which is why they appointed Scicluna as chairman.

"We feel Mr Napier has been a good chairman and we hope Scicluna will be too, particularly as this is an important moment for the company as it tries to break into the markets," a top 20 investor in RSA said.
