Chartered accountant Geoff Gollop will be in the running next month for the newly created post of elected mayor for Bristol.

Back in May the people of Bristol, from a turnout of 24%, voted in favour of a directly elected mayor to run the city council by a margin of 5,100 votes.

Since then 11 individuals have said they will stand in the upcoming elections, including Conservative candidate Geoff Gollop (OBE) who last year became Lord Mayor of the city.

According to Gollop’s website his professional focus has always been small business. He has extensive knowledge of running successful companies of all sizes, “including the burden of red tape that strangles many small firms.”

He is also active in the Bristol Chamber of Commerce and Institute of Directors, and is vice president of the West of England Society for Chartered Accountants (WESCA).

As a general practitioner Gollop runs his own business, Geoff Gollop & Co, and also advises businessmen. As the “business-peoples’ favourite”, his priorities are to improve transport, education and the economy in Bristol.

He told the BBC: "Reducing the rich-poor divide in Bristol is extremely important to me and I would help our deprived communities by improving transport and education in these areas and encouraging business growth so that people can access work and investors find the city attractive.

In addition to Gollop the following individuals have said they will stand:

  • Craig Clarke – Independent
  • Tim Collins – Independent
  • George Ferguson – Independent
  • Neil Maggs – Respect
  • Spud Murphy – Independent
  • Eric Mutch – Independent
  • Daniella Radice – Green
  • Marvin Rees – Labour
  • Jon Rogers - Liberal Democrat
  • Andy Thorne – Independent

On 23 October an official list of all candidates will be released and the successful candidate will take over the running of the city council from the election on 15 November until May 2016.
