It may be almost redundant to say, but judging a practice in 2018 is a difficult task.

True, it was never easy, but where previously size was enough to level any playing field, now any number of multiple offerings that a practice can trade on means judging is a rigorous process to say the least.

Specialism, technology, marketing, staffing. Now add multiple metrics of growth, acquisition, retention and – yes – ambition and the judge's life is not an easy one. Oh, and did we mention client management?

How to clear the mists? Easy. We try harder – just in the way the practices are. After a lot of deliberation, we can confidently say tonight's winners are true pioneers, stretching the capabilities of a modern practice and looking beyond the norm.
