Award winner John StokdykAccountingWEB technology editor John Stokdyk (right) was honoured as the online Business Finance Journalist of the Year in the Institute of Financial Accountants' annual awards.

Other winners included 2008 Finance Student of the Year Bernard Eastwood and Recruitment Agency of the Year Reed Accountancy. The business finance journalists were nominated by IFA members and included Ali Hussain of the Sunday Times (print category), PASS magazine editor Alex Miller (trade category), Radio 4's Eddie Mair and Declan Curry, the TV category winner for his work on BBC Breakfast.

The IFA awards have been a longstanding feature in the accountancy calendar and help raise the profile of what recently appointed chief executive David Woodgate called "the best kept secret in the finance world".

Addressing an audience that included former ICAEW chief executive and current IFA council chairman Eric Anstee, COIT president Nick Goulding and the afternoon's comedian compere Kulvinder Ghil, Woodgate said, "I'm coming to the end of my look and listen phase and am convinced the IFA is an organisation with tremendous potential that has not been fully exploited."

The next step was to put into action a plan that would underpin the IFA's position as the "institute of choice for financial professionals in the SME sector". As part of the organisation's rising profile, it was on the verge of recognition by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), Woodgate revealed.

Anstee confirmed the ICAEW's supportive attitude to the IFA. The UK's biggest institute had put the IFA's nomination forward to IFAC, and it was natural for it to help a body that catered for a niche that the ICAEW did not reach as well, Anstee said. After his controversial experiences attempting to mastermind a merger with CIMA and CIPFA, he said any further extension of the ICAEW's relationship with the IFA was unlikely.

The 2008 IFA Annual Award categories were sponsored by insolvency firm FA Simms & Partners (Student of the Year), CCH (Recruitment Agency) and insurance group Lockton Affinity (Business Journalists). Here is the fhe full list of all the finalists:

Keep up the good work in 2009 also
Congratulations and keep up the good work in 2009 too.

Now that we know the results of IFA's application to IFAC which was supported by the ICAEW, I wonder when ICAEW would support IFA's application for FULL MEMBER of the IFAC.

Hope to see AIA being supported too by the ICAEW. Any comments from Eric and Prof Hunt?

Thanks for all the kind words and comiserations
I've been enjoying the warm glow for the past week now - and not just from the fine lunch the IFA laid on.

As I put it in a separate blog posting, Aw shucks... I couldn't have done it without your help!

Congratulations! A well earned reward; I get 75% of my non-verifiable CPD by reading various accounting web articles and comments as they are far more informative and topical than other providers. Keep up the good work.
