The Institute of Chartered Accountants of England & Wales (ICAEW) has criticised the Independent on Sunday for running an "inaccurate" story last weekend, which claimed secret Mori polling shows the Institute will lose the vote on the proposed merger with CIPFA.

A spokesman for the ICAEW said: "A story in the Independent on Sunday implied that the Institute had carried out eve of vote MORI polling and that the data indicated the Institute would not secure a two thirds majority in favour of integrating with CIPFA. This was inaccurate. The Institute carried out MORI polling in June to test the appetite of the membership for integration. No further polling has been carried out and none is planned."

Ballot papers have been sent to ICAEW members and voting has begun. Votes can be cast online, via mail or fax, or in person at the Special Meeting to approve the merger on 25 October. To vote, or for further details, visit www.icaew.co.uk/cipfavote

Who phoned whom yesterday?

After an excellent tax lecture in Guildford yesterday evening an FCA asked if I was also a member and I said "not now".

He then told me that he had received a phone call from a foreign sounding gentleman claiming to be from HO and enquiring if he had received his merger voting papers.

I wondered if was a Mori call but we agreed that if the call really was from ICAEW HO that that was disgraceful beyond belief.

Has anyone else had, or heard of, any similar instance(s)? Or perhaps an ICAEW spokesperson is able to issue an explanation or denial?

I had the call, too
A very polite, foreign sounding gentleman posed the same two questions to me.
