Practice News: New AIM specialist joins PKF Littlejohn

A round-up of the latest news, appointments, executive moves and acquisitions from the world of practice during January 2015.

New AIM specialist partner joins PKF Littlejohn

26 January Accounting firm PKF Littlejohn has appointed audit and capital markets specialist, Joseph Archer as partner with immediate effect.

His appointment brings the number of audit partners to 23, and the total number of partners at the firm to 34. This is the first PKF Littlejohn partner appointment in 2015 and follows the appointment of five new partners in 2014.

Archer was previously at Crowe Clark Whitehill where he was responsible for managing the audits for all their fully listed clients and many AIM listed clients. Archer has also worked for Mazars, and in-house at FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies Smith’s Group Plc and Halliburton.

Carmine Papa, managing partner of PKF Littlejohn, said: “Joseph brings tremendous experience of the AIM-listed market. Existing clients will benefit from his valuable corporate finance insight, in particular his transactional and due diligence expertise as part of the IPO process.

“As we continue to expand our capital markets offerings, Joseph’s appointment will help us to increase the number of the firm’s listed clients.”

SEC chief accountant Eichen re-joins EY

19 January - Jaime Eichen, former chief accountant for the division of investment management at the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has re-joined EY as a partner in the professional practice group with a focus on the wealth and asset management sector.

At the SEC, Eichen was responsible for interpreting new accounting and auditing regulations and directing the financial reporting, accounting and auditing practices of investment companies in compliance with the federal securities laws.

She also served for more than three years as an assistant chief accountant for the division of investment management at the SEC.

Prior to joining the SEC in 2008, Eichen was a senior manager at EY and provided assurance services to asset management clients, including mutual funds, hedge funds, private equity funds, investment advisers and general partners.

Catax to expand with three new offices

16 January - Mark Tighe, managing director of Catax Solutions, said he will be expanding his team with additional offices.

Catax Solutions has grown considerably in the last few years, and the team is now made up of more than 50 people with offices in Manchester, Birmingham and London

The firm, which specialises in securing tax relief for the owners of commercial property, is expanding to include three additional offices.

McCormack to lead Cooley tax practice in London

12 JanuaryCooley LLP, a technology and life sciences US law firm, has launched a UK practice in London with Michael McCormack leading the tax practice.

Prior to joining Cooley as tax director, McCormack was a tax partner with Edwards Wildman, having launched their tax practice in 2012. Before that he was head of tax at Salans. He has a strong background in the tax aspects of all corporate, M&A and commercial work nd specifically specialises in corporate, finance and property taxation.

The new office will include 20 partners and more than 55 lawyers and other professionals.

Gething appointed first-tier tribunal judge

12 January - Heather Gething, head of Herbert Smith Freehills’ London tax disputes practice, has been appointed a judge in the first-tier tribunal.

Gething was appointed after a rigorous process and on the recommendation of the Judicial Appointments Commission in England, which selects candidates on merit through fair and open competition.

With 30 years' experience handling tax matters on behalf of clients in the retail, manufacturing, shipping, energy, telecoms, financial and insurance sectors, she is acknowledged as a leading top tier contentious tax practitioner in both Chambers UK 2015 and Legal 500 UK 2014.

Her appointment took place with effect from 9 January.

French Duncan creates entrepreneurial services division

12 January - The firm's new division is aimed at Scottish SMEs.

It will be headed up by Greg Callan, and forms part of French Duncan’s aim to gain wider recognition amongst entrepreneurs.

It will be run through their hubs at Glasgow, Edinburgh and Forth Valley.

Five pass exams at Duncan & Toplis 

12 January The five, who work at the firm, have passed their ACA exams.

Ruth Speirs and Daniel Smithson from the Newark office, Oli Phillips and Sarah Carter from the Lincoln office and Alex Beck from the Grantham office were the successful students.

Former Crowe Clarke Whitehill man joins Armstrong Watson 

January David Kitson joined the firm as tax partner.

He is based in the Skipton office and will operate across the Yorkshire region.

Kitson spent much of his career with RSM Tenon before joining Crowe Clark Whitehill in December 2012. He has over 20 years’ experience advising OMBs on tax and financial matters.

Baker Tilly hires vice president of R3

6 January - Philip Sykes was appointed as head of the firm's London restructure and recovery service line. London Restructure and Recovery service line.

Sykes was previously national head of restructuring and insolvency at Moore Stephens.

He specialised in corporate restructuring since 1980 and has experience across a number of sectors, including retail, property and construction, financial services, insurance, manufacturing, commodities and international trade, engineering and agriculture.

As well as projects in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Sykes has also worked on a number of international projects in countries including the USA, Cayman, Europe, Thailand and Indonesia.

He will step up to president of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals (R3) this year.

Former KPMG partner heads Smith Cooper

6 January - Jackie Hendley will take the helm at the head office in Birmingham. 

She is a former tax partner at KPMG's Birmingham office and replaces Jeremy Cope. Cope will focus on developing the firm's audit and accounting division in the city.

PwC appoints Rothschild man 

6 January - Stephen Moore joins the firm as partner after 10 years at the investment bank.

He spent five years of his time at Rothschild as a director. He will now be responsible for advising Yorkshire companies on M&A

Knill James makes new tax team hires

January - The firm made five new senior appointments in January.

Personal tax senior manager Lorna Sizer and private client experts Kirsty Royds-Jones and Sarah Robinson have already joined the team together with senior VAT advisor Alison Sampson.

Michael Chapman corporate tax senior manager, begins work this month.

All five have previously worked for Mazars in Brighton.
