PwC promotes record number of partners

20 June - PwC has promoted a record 61 partners for the third year in a row, with 45% of these partners working outside of London.

Creating a diverse workforce, three in ten of the new partners are female, which is up on last year’s 23% result. Adding to this, 40% of the new directors are female. he newly promoted partners, aged between 32 and 51 represent a diverse range of backgrounds, skills and experience - with more women, flexible workers and people based in the regions moving into senior positions.

Ian Powell, outgoing Chairman and Senior Partner at PwC said: “For a third successive year we have increased the number of new partners and have continued to improve the diversity of our senior people. These promotions reflect the importance we place on diversity, the role of the regions to the UK’s economic success and our commitment to investing in our people across all our client services.”

Mitchell Charlesworth launches recruitment-kick

27 June - Mitchell Charlesworth has appointed Ramon McKenna to manage its audit and accounts team, while Louise Casey has been promoted to manager.

McKenna joined Mitchell Charlesworth from SB & P, where he started as an apprentice, progressing to assistance manager. Casey has been with Mitchell Charlesworth since 2012, where she has attained her ACA qualification.

The Manchester-based firm has been on a recruitment kick as of late. Managing partner Paul Wainwright told Manchester evening news that the staff developments will drive turnover to £10m. Speaking about the new appointments, Wainwright said: “We are undergoing a strong period of growth at Mitchell Charlesworth with a series of new appointments and promotions.”

KPMG strengthens private client team

21 June - Alexander Marcham joins KPMG’s London private client advisory team, where he will focus on the firm’s international clients.

Marcham spent over ten years working for Deloitte, advising on individuals and family offices on a wide range of UK and cross-border tax matters. KPMG’s head of London private client advisory Greg Limb highlighted Marcham’s wealth of experience in international business and personal wealth advice.

Commenting on his appointment, Marcham said: Rapid regulatory change across the globe is creating increased complexity for those who have business and private affairs in multiple jurisdictions. This makes it all the more important for clients to manage cross-border tax affairs closely in order to minimise risk and ensure the right amount of tax is paid.”

GT Cambridge appoints practice leader

13 June - Grant Thornton’s Cambridge office has appointed Darren Bear as Practice leader, replacing Paul Naylor who takes the new head of growth position.

Bear has 11 years’ experience working for GT, growing the firm’s advisory services. In his new position, Naylor will develop growth opportunities across the firm. Naylor served in his former position for over four years, leading a 100-strong team.

Commenting on the role changes, James Brown, regional managing partner, said "The Cambridge office has grown significantly over the last few years and the business is in an excellent position as we embark on the next phase of our growth journey. The leadership changes represent a key step in this process.”

Deloitte announces new managing partner

3 June - Deloitte has selected Matt Ellis as new managing partner for tax in the UK and Switzerland.

Ellis replaces Andy Hodge, who recently retired from the firm. Ellis previously managed Deloitte’s Southampton, Reading, and London offices. Speaking about his appointment, Ellis emphasised data analytics and technology as growing importance in taxation, as he leads the business in this “crucial time”.

David Sproul, Senior Partner and Chief Executive of Deloitte, said: “I am delighted to announce Matt as our new managing partner for tax. Matt has been a great leader of our global employer services practice and I am sure that he will bring the same leadership and focus to his new role as head of our tax practice.

Kreston Reeves and Spofforths merge

2 June – Kreston Reeves and Spofforths have merged, spreading their 450 staff and 50 partners across 10 locations in London and the South East.

Richard Spofforths and and Bryan Elkins from Spofforths join the Kreston Reeves management board, which includes Nigel Fright as Managing Partner, Andrew Griggs as Senior Partner, Clive Stevens, the firm’s existing Chairman and David Hurst, Partner and Managing Director of Kreston Reeves Financial Planning.

As the firm expands, it will move towards a more regionalised management structure across London and the South East.

Confirming the merger on the 1 June, Nigel Fright, Managing Partner of Kreston Reeves, said: By joining forces with a firm very similar to us in outlook, culture and ambition, we'll be creating an organisation that will further enhance the services and expertise we are able to offer our clients as well as presenting further opportunities for all our people.”

BDO names north west lead partner

2 June - BDO has named Ed Dwan as new lead partner for the North West.

Dwan has been with BDO for eight years, heading up the national tax risk consultancy team, and working with multinational corporates. He will oversee the Manchester and Liverpool offices, and manage the firm’s digital transformation and develop new talent.

Commenting on his appointment, Dwan said: “It was the calibre and diversity of the firm’s talent that really attracted me to this post. Ensuring we recruit and develop the best people will remain my priority.

Wilkins Kennedy merge with JR Antoine & Partners

1 June – Wilkins Kennedy’s Amersham office has merged with JR Antoine & Partners.

The merger opportunity arose for Wilkins Kennedy after a senior partner from JR Antoine & Partners retired, and the existing partnership between the firms, and Wilkins Kennedy’s expansion plans, led to the partnership.

Stephen Grant, Managing Partner at Wilkins Kennedy Amersham said “We are delighted to be able to offer clients the additional benefits and range of services that Wilkins Kennedy can provide whilst maintaining the same high quality service clients have been used to at JR Antoine & Partners.”
