Juggling parenthood with a career can be a struggle for anyone, but for two working mums who have just started their own accountancy practice, it’s actually a dream come true.

Accounting4contractors, based in Surrey, is the brainchild of Natasha Baker and Esther Guy, who both worked together at recruitment firm Reed.

Having completed their accountancy qualifications to help keep their plumber and plasterer husbands’ books in check, the pair decided last year to quit their jobs and start up in practice.

Both women have known each other for 20 years and have backgrounds in IT and financial advice.

Their new venture was officially launched in February this year - handily side-stepping the hectic self assessment season - and provides services for contractors, freelancers and the self-employed.

“I’m used to being busy, but starting our own practice means wearing all hats, all the time. You’re the IT support, marketing department and sales team all rolled into one,” Guy said.

“But it’s working out brilliantly with our children. We no longer work massively long hours and can be there for the kids’ special events and school plays, etc.”

Guy has three girls, the youngest of whom is eight and Baker has a boy, who is just starting school.

The most difficult part to starting up in practice isn’t juggling motherhood, they say, but rather being patient with slow, steady progress.

“You want to be successful and have loads of clients, but the reality is you need to accept these things take time and not get frustrated. We’re growing steadily and doing well,” Guy said.

Parenthood and accountancy is frequently debated on the site, including in our featured blog A Mum and an Accountant.
