The UK’s best accountancy firms - as rated by their clients, practice experts and peers - gathered in London on Thursday evening to learn which of them had won AccountingWEB’s coveted Practice Excellence Awards.

The awards are based on independent satisfaction ratings and feedback collected in an online survey in which 3,500 people rated their accountants. The top performing small, medium and large firms were invited to present their claims to a panel of judges including AccountingWEB editors, practice consultants Steve Pipe, Mark Lloydbottom and Ric Payne and representatives of our sponsors, Xero, Intuit and Sage.

The final step in this 360-degree assessment involved an online vote by AccountingWEB members. The decisions in the three cateories are as follows:

Small firm winner - Coalesco Certified Accountants
Shortlisted: Atkinsons and Murray Associates

Medium firm winner - Seymour Taylor
Shortlisted: CGA and Rickaby & Co

Large firm winner - Milsted Langdon
Shortlisted: Hillier Hopkins and Rouse Partners

More than 100 accountants, sponsors and guests attended the presentation at wine-tasting emporium Vinopolis.

AccountingWEB publisher Andy North commented: “Tonight is about celebrating all the firms who took part in the Practice Excellence Programme and particularly those who made it to our judging shortlists – getting to this stage is no mean feat and is worthy of much praise.  Your clients rated you, the judges assessed you and finally, your peers have voted for you. You should all be celebrating your Practice Excellence Awards success.

“At AccountingWEB we’ve been thrilled by the tremendous response to the PEA programme. Over 250 firms entered this year and collectively we surveyed more than 3,500 businesses.”

But the Practice Excellence Programme is not just about prizes. The information gathered in the Practice Excellence Survey has been compiled into benchmarks for each participating firm, and more detailed client feedback and sector comparison reports for those who want more detail on their performance.

Now in its third year, the Practice Excellence Programme has evolved into a long-term project to measure and assess firms’ performance by measuring key performance indicators including flexibility, business understanding, value for money and clients’ willingness to recommend their accountant. Keeping track of these measures and addressing the points raised each year can help firms to serve their clients better and improve the profession’s reputation across the board.

Look out for further coverage in the weeks and months ahead as the winners share the secrets of their success and AccountingWEB presents more detailed findings on trends within the profession.

As PEA judge Steve Pipe put it: “Identifying truly inspirational firms and seeing what they do will give other accountants the courage and ability to push their firms to new levels of clients service and results.”

We look forward to seeing your firm in next year’s Practice Excellence Survey.

Congratulations to all the PEA13 nominees and winners

It was a special evening to meet such a switched-on and friendly bunch of accountants. As Steve Pipe suggested, they really are inspirational.

Over the next few weeks and months, the AccountingWEB team will be doing follow up interviews and analysis of the results to learn more about the secrets of their success.

In the meantime, if you'd like to see more coverage from the awards ceremony, have a look at our blog, What a night!

As hinted above, it would be really useful to hear from these firms what THEY think they are doing right but it would also be great to hear from their clients as to what THEY think the firms are doing right!

So proud of you all!

Congratulations to the winners - Your staff and clients know you are at the top of your game, and now the world knows it too.

Intuit is so proud to be associated with this prestigious award - we know that running a busy practice is not an easy thing by any wild stretch of the imagination, and we congratulate the firms that entered for their dedication to "getting it right".  The winning firms all had one thing in common. They combined an intense focus on client service with opportunities for the staff to stretch and grow at the same time - a truly magical combination.

With this in mind, I encourage an ongoing dialogue here.  Perhaps everyone who entered can state what they do that helps create magic in their firms, and everyone else can learn from it?  When you think about it, none of you really compete with each other.  You all have your specialities, your niche, and your loyal clients who would never go to anyone else.

So - what do YOU do that makes your firm better than any other firm in the UK?

Murray Associates

I just wanted to say a big congratulation to Murray Associates for being nominated.    As ICB Glasgow branch leader.   Murray Associates have been extremely supportive of our branch and thrive to find excellence in our line of business and our strong believers in CPD.

We appreciate their support and are delighted to see their nomination.  Sorry for the late post but I missed the article during a very busy period.

They are an excellent example of how bookkeepers and accountants can work well together.

Kind Regards
