The winner of the 2012 Practice Excellence Award for small firms has a clear vision of what it wants to achieve, and is relentless in measuring its progress. John Stokdyk finds out more from partner Ian Main (left in the picture, collecting the prize).
Stark Main & Co, a fast-growing accountancy firm based in Selkirk and Edinburgh, has a number of feathers in its cap alongside the 2012 small firm Practice Excellence Award. It is also the current holder of the British Accountancy Award for independent firm of the year in Scotland and has won a string of similar citations from AVN and the Scottish Accountancy Awards in recent years.
While these credentials are a nice boost to the firm’s credibility, founding partner Ian Main tries not to be too boastful, or tout them as the firm’s leading edge. “That’s not really our natural style,” he says.
What really sets the firm apart is its combination of vision and focus, which stood out in the firm’s shortlist entry form for in the 2012 Practice Excellence Awards.
Main and his co-founder James Stark set out in 2006 to create a dynamic, client-focused firm that, in the words of its mission statement, aspires to be “the leading tax and accountancy advisors in the Scottish Borders & beyond”.
