To celebrate his Outstanding Contribution to Accountancy prize in the 2016 Practice Excellence Awards, we offer a collection of articles based around the work of ‘Trusted Advisor’ author David Maister.

The Practice Excellence Awards were conceived to celebrate excellence within individual firms. Last year AccountingWEB added an outstanding contribution award to the roll call as a way to thank and congratulate people who have made an impact across the wider profession.

The winner this year is David Maister, the doyen of practice development experts.

Everywhere you turn these days, accountants, software vendors and consultants are talking about their “trusted advisor” approach. But former Harvard University business professor David Maister actually wrote the book about it back in 2000.

While his concepts have become a standard template for delivering professional services, the book shook up a lot of accountants from the Big Four down by emphasising the importance of personal relationships over technical skills.

There’s so much more in his books and blogs to inspire accountants to think in new ways about their client service and marketing ethos. David Maister retired from consultancy and writing in 2011, but to celebrate his contributions, we have gathered together a short reading list from articles published on the site during the past 16 years.

We also include a short video below from the man himself thanking AccountingWEB for his honour.
