I've tried Futrli (when it was crunch boards) and using Spotlight at the moment. Was having a hunt yesterday to see what else was around. I thought Dry Run looked quite interesting but could find none that quite fit the bill (for me). Spotlight is giving me some pretty reports with a lot of information, variance analysis, etc but not quite what I think my clients really need - which is a cash flow projection showing quarterly VAT payments and Corporation Tax payments - and one that is easy to muck about with. Perhaps I haven't invested enough time in them to make them work properly.

The client has to register for EC Sales list services through his/her government gateway account and can then set you up as their agent. Then it will appear as an option on your agent screen. Quite why HMRC thought this a good way of doing this I've no idea! Right pain.

It's like the guy on the train being asked why he kept [***] up bits of paper and throwing them out of the window.
"To keep the elephants away" he replied.
"But there no elephants in London" said the confused traveller.
" You see, it works!"

Completely agree with jon_griffey. I should have thought it would be entirely possible for the ICAEW (my own reg body) to provide a document which satisfies the minimum requirements. It may be dull but it would be very useful. I'm a sole practitioner and I find engagement letters a complete nightmare. I find ICAEW guidance on the subject disjointed and I believe we deserve far better. (Actually I find ICAEW's whole website about as unhelpful as HMRC's!) I tried the CCH engagement letter tool but didn't get on with it. I've just signed up for a GP trial and demo and now Accountany Manager as well. In my view their cost is far outweighed by the huge time saving I am hoping these products bring.

Oh dear. 6.23 am on Monday and ... still down. I hope this is elevated. Letters to MPs may be. Certainly to institutes, accounting bodies etc. Four days now so that's more than 5% of total time left to file tax returns.

6am on 18th and still down. Will the tax return deadline be extended? No issues reported on HMRC online service issue pages so no help there. Grrrr!

The director also has statutory duties and obligations for which it is entirely reasonable to expect compensation. If that compensation is by way of a pension contribution rather than salary, all well and good. HMRC rarely challenge such payments and as long as you are happy that the director's remuneration package as a whole (salary + pension + benefits) is reasonable and in line with commercial norms - which is highly likely given the company's level of profit - then I don't think you'll have a problem.

Personally, I like the cloud thing for all the reasons quoted: I don't have to worry about what type of computer I have, which version of the software I'm using, software updates, backups etc. My feeling is my computer is more likely to go kaput than anything that may happen on the servers of the software provider. I may be wrong in that but I've had 2 serious computer problems which would not have been a problem if all my systems were in the cloud. Xero of course was completely unaffected.
But what I really like are the automated bank feeds. For my own client portfolio (small local businesses), because of the bank feed and the 'bank rules' in Xero, most of their books are updated almost automatically with very little external input. That saves huge amounts of time for me and my clients and means I can work on my clients' books when it suits me not when they get round to sending me something.
As a sole practitioner, I don't know how I could be as proactive - especially now as we come up to the end of the tax year - in making sure all clients have done what they need to do. If these bank feeds were available in PC based systems (which they were with Bankstream) then that works for me too. The fact that systems like Xero are in the cloud is an added benefit (in my view), but it's the bank feeds that really do it for me.

... and submission acknowledgement from HMRC just received so would seem that going through Xero/Sage or presumably other software does work OK.

Still not working at 12:29 using agent login but I do seem to be able to file through Xero and someone else filed through Sage. I can't prove that it's gone through 'cos I can't even look at submitted returns on HMRC's website but Xero is telling me it filed OK so presume it did!
