I have two clients with whom I unfortunately do their VAT. I have not yet signed them up to MTD but I record their transactions on an accountancy program but I would have to use bridging software to file under MTD. The next quarter to file for both clients is 29th February 2020 and I propose doing it under the old portal for the last time and then sign them up! I have three nagging questions.
1. When will be the first quarter where I will definitely be charged a penalty for not using MTD?
2. Will I still be able to use bridging software from quarter 31st May 2020 onwards?
3. Does anybody want these two particular clients if 2. is not allowed?

I am glad I have not yet signed my clients up for MTD! What a load of rubbish it is.Seems like Sage xero and quickbooks cannot handle it. I have not got the time to spend trying to file VAT returns through a failed system. Hopefully the Government will scrap it in the next budget. I wonder sometimes whether there were back handers from HMRC to the software companies to promote this garbage!

Does this mean that UK non residents living outside the EU will be at an advantage and retain the PA ?

Yes we are in for an exciting few months. No or very little VAT coming in and potentially £39 billion going to subsidise another ill thought out inefficient system!

Yes I did think come July the VAT take would cause the whole ridiculous idea to be scrapped. Here's hoping! I'm not sure the accountants are making a fast buck but the software companies are! Fortunately my first returns are not due until October and I feel sorry for those who have had problems! Back from Seychelles in August.

I never qualified but worked for many large and small
CA's since the early seventies. I have also had my own clientele for 30 odd years and am now 67 and still expanding my practice. I feel that the knowledge I have is vastly more experienced than any qualified I have worked with. I don't care what 'professional' bodies think as you only have to look at the huge [***] ups large firms have made Equitable Life and the like for example. Once I have recovered from the 'burning by some clever dick or miss dick' I will rise up and provide good inexpensive advice! I might be a '[***]' but I had a life in my younger days whilst these exam lovers missed out and for what?

Disgusting! I call it theft. Surely the monopolies commission should be called in to look into this?
I have read readers problems with registering AML and I experienced the same last October. HMRC do not provide any supervision as they are totally incapable of doing so.

And I am fed up with watching a comedian advertising a product that gives the impression that taking a photo on your smartphone will complete your accounting for VAT!
Very unconvincing. Back to my Excel spreadsheets. More accurate and at no cost.

I told you so!
This will be scrapped in July 2019 when the main event starts and no money is coming in and we need to give away £50 billion to the EEC!

I am totally confused! A colleague of mine went to a Barclays Bank seminar on MTD and they said that bridging software and spreadsheets will not be allowed to be used by HMRC. I have a couple of clients who have IT PSC's who will have to close down next April because of the new rules on employment status. I was going to advise them to continue doing their VAT from April 2019 on spreadsheets using bridging software for that one year. Have they now got to purchase a VAT filing program. Interesting to hear John Stokdyk now having doubts about MTD coming in on Brexit worries. Hopefully somebody will come to their senses and drop the whole thing before an inevitable car crash! 80% of accountants are not prepared and I am one of them! 95% of small businesses who take no advice have not got a clue.
