It has taken us 2 years to get the details up to date with all of the separate departments as they all have different requirements - as previous posters say, some easy, some incredibly convoluted!

Thanks everyone - I didn't get an alert that there were answers so haven't seen until now. We are around 60% but other overheads are less than 20% so I'm not sure that the three thirds principle still holds true. What do accountants spend money on other than software and rent!

This is very similar to my situation. I had 15 years in retail but was made redundant in my mid 30's. I did a full time fast track bookkeeping/Excel/payroll course and was lucky enough to be offered a job after 4 months.
My employer appreciated my management experience and my loyalty to an employer as much as my desire to get into the accounts sector.
I too thought that Accountancy had more of a future than retail although as a previous poster says, entering the profession now it helps to be as much of an IT guru as an accountant.
I would suggest starting AAT and work towards applying for some sort of graduate recruitment scheme. Temping or work experience are also useful where you can get them

Absolutely - I have been through exactly the same rigmarole over a period of 9 months in which I had to call 7 times to get the incorrect account deleted before I could start again.. Now I ma successfully signing up clients for MTD but only by doing the following:
- Logging into the ASA
- Opening another window, bringing up the sign up to MTD instructions and clicking on the link there.
It appears that there is now way to sign up clients from the ASA log in page! I only discovered this by accident and then had to reverse-engineer the exercise to work out how.
I do feel, however, that I know more about this process than HMRC themselves now!
Fun fun fun

Interested in this system - do you account for the income in advance at all with these monthly payments or just manage the risk?

That is exactly the question that I wanted answered but couldn't find anywhere on the official website!
