They are a merciless money machine fuelled only by the scent of sales. Try phoning support and get put in a queue, phone sales and there is someone positively salivating on the other end within 2 rings...
Anyone affected by the 7/11/2019 Openspace outage? it took down our entire IRIS system due to I believe bad programming on their part. Whilst it was technically not 'their fault' Azure went down why did the Accountancy suite refuse to load? why are their no 'checks' in the software to allow for a simple scenario such as a website being down? from a disgruntled IT Manager.
Good excuse to blame someone else for their shoddy programming. Love the blurb on the menu screen now "our advice as usual is always to be on the latest version" - excuse me? weren't we supposed to supress the latest version?
Definitely - there is no motivation to run optimised code anymore. In the 8 bit days they squeezed every last bit of performance out of the machine. Software companies also do not follow the rules and take shortcuts during programming which then causes problems with later Operating system releases. IMO the entire 'suite' needs to be optimised with a bare bones reprogramming. Each module is separate - for a simple SQL query based interface it should run a lot quicker and trouble free!
You hit the nail on the head there - we bought a new Server, latest SQL Licences and it still runs like a dead Dog. I know someone who invested in a £15k RAID SSD setup and is still disappointed with the speed. I have basically upgraded our entire system in order to accommodate with a 1gb Network. It gets worse with every release as they bolt new stuff onto a very shaky foundation.
To be honest IRIS causes me no end of problems - from an IT perspective the programming leaves a lot to be desired. Check the known issues part of the website (hidden) or try a support call. Make sure you say you are running the latest version or you get fobbed off with 'This is fixed in version xxxxx'
If I were to go by personal experience from an IT perspective I would rate IRIS Accountancy suite the lowest. I find the suite totally unstable and at times very frustrating in reliability. Excuse after excuse about 'known issues' is flaunted on their help lines - the latest is that Automail does not work on a Terminal server install. At least 50 percent of my time is down to resetting Locks and Logins - surely I cannot be alone in my experience?
I don't know if I am alone in this but I find the IRIS Accountancy suite to be an absolute cludge. I am probably looking at it from a programming rather than functionality point of view as I am an IT Manager. This software has caused me more headaches than our entire catalogue of Software combined. Automail is 'flaky' and will crash without warning - sometimes [***] up client references to letters. IRIS Docs is temperamental too - if the wind blows in the wrong direction it crashes. To be fair, if I could make this software obsolete I would. Just my honest opinion.

Because as with all IRIS stuff they charge you for it or as a 'professional service'

Probably Microsoft's problem - they do like to blame someone else.
