As an update, ours finally came through in early March 2018 - so took around 5 and a half months in total which is pretty disgraceful by any standards. We also had to pay the additional fee (£40 x 2) which was slightly unexpected.

Hi, just wondering if anyone else is encountering issues with HMRC's online AML renewal process. I completed my registration renewal during Feb 18 and paid the fee (which was £130) at the same time, I also kept the HMRC payment receipt. I have checked the progress from time to time but it was always just the same, Completed, Submitted & Decision Pending. I contacted HMRC (the general VAT line) a few weeks ago and they said ignore any guidance on how long this will take as they are struggling with the volume and resources, if the web page said it will take longer than 45 days it could take much longer than that. I called the general VAT line because the AML number in Southend has been deleted (I have spoken with them directly in the past and they were quite helpful), the VAT guys said they don't even have an internal number for the AML team now and they confirmed the old number had been taken down.
Anyway on Monday 21 May I received a further email from HMRC communicator saying please log into to your AML accounts with HMRC in order to check, update, and submit the Responsible Persons section so that they can start the process of Approval and or Fit & Proper checking and to do so before a deadline of 25 June. So a few days later I did this and submitted the update. Unfortunately the system then took me through to a final payment screen where it was asking me for the £130 again, under the exact same reference which I have already paid!
When I log in now the system says application made May 18 rather than Feb 18, and now rather than simply saying your application will be reviewed by HMRC it also says "payment is due in 28 days". So it appears to be ignoring that this is just the update they requested and treating as a complete application and requesting payment even though already paid 3 months ago.
I called the VAT guys again and they gave me the email address for the AML team. I have sent them a very detailed email in chronological order and attached their receipt which proves the £130 fee was paid. My email was only sent 3 working days ago but heaven knows if I will get any response from them.
Anyone else encountering problems with HMRC AML and the renewal system?
