Hi Tornado. Can you tell me if ANYWHERE there has been an acknowledgement of my predicament (I dare say I am not alone). I have 60 clients of which 40 wouldn't even know how to turn a computer on leave alone use a commercial accountancy package (how many HMRC staff know how to use one ? yet they are insisting we have to). Also many of my clients in Cornwall are dependent on the holiday season. The current tax system works brilliantly for them. I don't pester them between April and October and they send me their accounts in November and I have 3 months to do the lot. Simple. When in August would one of these clients have time to do any accounting? They go to bed at midnight having sorted their guests. They are up at 5 am to prepare breakfasts then clean rooms and order provisions etc etc and take more bookings. Has ANYONE at HMRC even given a passing thought to the people who generate the money in order to pay their salaries? Even my local 6 tory MPs can't be bothered with small and micro businesses in Cornwall. I really despair. Why can't we get some REAL dialogue with the decision makers. Why do they and their political masters discount the small businesses. Are they trying to drive us out of business? What have we done to incur such overwhelming wrath from them?

Unfortunately the expected delays we predicted here some years back only serves to show that 2023-24 is probably a moveable feast. What HMRC and the big four accountancy bodies are not addressing is how an agent with say 60 clients, 40 of whom don't even own a computer, are going to be trained up in time for implementation. I do not provide book-keeping services so who will not only train these clients but also check that their inputs are correct? Who is going to ensure the quarterly updates go in on time. Quite frankly there won't be enough hours in the day to do this. What will happen during the June to September holiday season here in Cornwall when many of my clients will be more worried about making a living rather than submitting to the whims of civil servants who have never understood the self employed and who in the main treat us with derision. No one has ever deigned to even entertain the thought that self employed tax payers are trying to earn money not feed a tax computer. Our local MPs don't give a care to this subject. I will probably have to close my business and HMRC will have 60 clients without a clue. WHY CAN'T WE HAVE DIALOGUE BETWEEN MICRO BUSINESSES AND HMRC - WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT?

Hi Plega, perhaps I may be OTT but sadly I have seen this for 20 years. This is politicians double talk. The average man in the street thought businesses were going to get tax-payer backed loans not commercial loans from Banks (profiteering). This was portrayed as helping the small businesses but here in Cornwall no one can get a loan unless they sign their soul away in blood, if at all. As I predict many small but significant businesses in Cornwall will never recover thus accentuating the poverty already here. We have 6 out of 6 MPs who are Tories yet I hear NOTHING from them as a group pressurising the government to save the businesses on the brink of bankruptcy (their silence is deafening). Easter is traditionally the beginning of the 6 month period for the holiday industry to allow them to survive the winter. I will let you draw your own conclusion as to where UK holiday makers think they will stay this summer or more importantly summer 2021

To summarise all comments to date. This scheme is about enriching banks not saving businesses who ultimately still pay the large majority of tax in this country. It's still a case of "keep the Plebs in their place"

I get so angry it makes my blood boil. I would like to see who advised the Civil Servants in creating this smoke and mirrors scheme. A few Bank officials perhaps? It makes the Gov't look good without actually doing ANYTHING. Same old same old politics. One rule if you are in the club and another if you are not. Banks took tax payers money in 2008 and paid themselves hefty bonuses and they will do the same again - mark my words. The whole thing stinks. It seems to me that the Civil Service wants a large part of the small business sector to fail in order to simplify the complications they will face when they try to bring MTD in for everyone. So much for Tory's supporting small businesses. Since 2010 they have sought ways to screw us and they still do e.g. Employees get their money now and SMEs have to wait till June when they will already be bankrupt.

You couldn't make it up eh? So HMRC's friends have now become the enemy - join the club fellas (every time you hear HMRC refer to us as "customers" think "dumb milch cows"

VT have just announced their MTD is in pilot mode with HMRC and working smoothly. None of my clients will be going on MTD until they have to. Clients that are using cloud based systems especially bank streaming are having problems (not sure if they are MTD related though). Isn't it a pity we can't blame Brexit and MTD on Donald Trump or the Russians.
May be there are moles within HMRC. Otherwise the alternative is inconceivable - surely HMRC aren't THIS incompetent? Surely? eh?

The thing is, you can't sign up to mtd as an agent without having an aml registration in place, those that for whatever reason have had to register with hmrc aml supervision in recent months will know that the 45 day waiting period is a laughable joke.
So what happens to those who perhaps registered with hmrc within the time they specified only to find out that come April 1st the decision is still pending.
Personally I'm already keeping client records which would be compliant with mtd but I will probably wait till July before I even bother to switch anyone over.
Think I'll play the brexit game on this one.
Thank you for this. I was beginning to wonder whether I was going mad (though that can't be ruled out thanks to HMRC and MTD). Being a CIPFA accountant I have had to register AML with HMRC since 2015. I used to do this by letter each year and the system worked. I even got notified when I needed to pay each year and what reference to use. This year I got precisely NOTHING. Just before Christmas I realised that I hadn't paid for the current year. It took me 15 minutes to actually find an HMRC web page that told me how much I needed to pay and that I needed to log into my Gateway. Can you believe they have my wife's name registered to my Gateway just because I used it to investigate her pension!!! So to carry on I eventually was able to pay but I had to do this manually because the online system didn't work. Then I had to write to HMRC telling them which of their bank accounts I had paid into so I could get re-registered. After noting some 45 days later I was still "Pending" I left a comment asking for someone to call me. Surprise, surprise I actually did get a call from an apparent intelligent guy who told me that I had to pay an extra £110 for goodness only knows (CON!!!). So here am I still "Pending" with no one being able to tell me when I will be registered to sign up for MTD. There is a phrase including the word "brewery" I could mention. Since George Osborne stood up in Parliament using his infamous phrase "at the press of a button" I have been depressed with the lack of understanding this so called "small business supportive" Gov't has to how small business works. No one in the Civil Service has any desire to find out how disruptive this whole fiasco has been. They simply don't care and won't care until their VAT receipts suddenly plummet. There has never been any engagement with small businesses and it seems that the House of Lords, of all people, is the only institution that seems to have any grasp of the lunacy of this whole project. Can you imagine if they had implemented MTD for everyone what would have happened to Income Tax receipts?
