Probably the tip of a very large iceberg.

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but surely the total tax take over any twelve month period will be the same. Having four, twelve or fifty-two tax periods and respective payments within the next month, will reap the same amount of cash but increase the administration many times.
Does the Treasury think profits are made as easily as they can print money from the magical tree in the basement? What about seasonal work? Some industries may make their money in six months of the year and tick over for the rest. How will they then fund these fallow months?
I think the Wunderkind Chancellor is something of a lightweight once again promoted above his ability. It is one thing to be working in an investment bank and another thing completely controlling the country's complicated finances.

In more serious matters involving possible time at her majesties pleasure, the reason for clemency often given can be looking after elderly relatives at home even though they have many siblings able to do that task in their absence. Hell and Handcart springs to mind.

This was my takeaway too. It was only when he claimed for some building conversion work that the Revenue were triggered to look a bit closer into his tax affairs. I could accept if DHL were handling his VAT affairs exclusively, then he could have pleaded ignorance but then to try it on quite a bit more with a claim for something unrelated to his original work, is taking it far too far. The reduction was far too generous and I wonder as some have mentioned, if wokery was involved here.

Given the alleged benefits of Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining, it beggars belief that HMRC would not be using these technologies to find likely tax dodgers and recoup unpaid tax. Having experienced tax systems in other countries, the UK is, just like its response to the Covid pandemic, incredibly tardy and behind the curve. Is it due to institutional disorganisation or done deliberately?

I'm reminded about the different treatment of expenses provided for our legislators in the house of commons and the level of travel expenses paid for in addition to their salary which is likely to increase to around £85k next year. They do not have to deduct travel expenses from their already generous pay and declare it on a self assessment form, but it is paid in addition to it. Ian Blackford, SNP MP for Skye claimed around £90k recently for his annual expenses much of it for travel and accommodation for having to visit Westminster to sit and talk.

Is this another case of the Revenue going after the small man for what amounts to peanuts but leaving the multinational tax avoiders and evaders well alone because of either special "insider" deals or not able to risk the court battles in case they lose? From what I understand in the article the contractor was working as self employed and not under a limited company and so wasn't able to claim the advantages of that scheme. The journey from his home in Melrose to Swindon is 336 miles and takes around six hours driving, so not unreasonable to live locally at least during the week. National Rail suggests the cheapest rail fare of around £209 return and you can live in Swindon for a weekend for less than that so it would not be worth traveling home unless necessary. Once again we find the public sector has little grasp of the real world and the costs and pitfalls of trying to make an honest living. They should be well aware where their salaries and bonuses are coming from as last time I looked the Revenue do not make profits and do not pay corporation taxes.

I think they try it on hoping to get away with it due to suspected HMRC incompetence and delays. If they get found out then for small claims, jail is very unlikely and a penalty is probably the worst fate for medium size fraud. For the big frauds, I expect they will scarper quickly to ancestoral homes etc.
