A very helpful article which highlights the risks to all business owners. Being aware of these pitfalls is now essential in operating a small business today. You cannot be too careful.

I am totally in support of finding the right combination of technological tools, there is also the importance of understanding strategy and how technology can support it.

Absolutely upgrade any laptop old or new with a SSD. An laptop is only as fast as it's slowest component and that is often the hard drive. Don't be fooled by big numbers. I have upgraded many older laptops with SSD and they fly.

Whilst it is true to say that technology is evolving that has always been the case. I would say that Accountants need to develop a close relationship with a technology company and work closely with them. This means that the client gets the best in breed.

It is time for more education and encourage business owners to include it on their agenda along with P&L and balance sheets. I have written a short article on LinkedIn which echoes what is being said here also. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/time-change-your-password-elliott-chandle...

A good start to a up and coming technology. As a current IT Service provider we looked at providing VoIP as a service many moons ago but it wasn't ready for market. Much has been done to cater for this technology and it has matured. Although it is important to remember you get what you pay for and quality is very important. We tested a great many options and providers and now can say that we can offer this as a reliable and flexible service to our clients. Even today a client comment on the excellent call quality.

I agree with the sentiment that technology should not necessarily dictate how we work instead we should understand how technology can support the way we work. Understanding our processes, systems, resources and how they work together with technology can help towards greater efficiency. Bill Gates once said and I quote:
The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency.
The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.

I think that the term 'the cloud' is often used in many different contexts making it difficult for business owners to fully understand what is involved. There are many ways to take advantage of what is in 'the cloud' however I believe it is important to seek advice from a specialist just as I would seek advice from my accountant on Tax or accounting topics.

There are definitely savings to be gained in certain scenarios, particularly across a multi-site business. My company is successfully using VoIP services today and actually sell them to our clients. We first ventured into VoIP six years ago and found varying degrees of quality in the products available. If you are a small business and have a broadband connection are looking at VoIP my advice is strongly consider a dedicated Internet Connection for VoIP to avoid degradation of service. Also with the cost of private Internet Connections tumbling the is great potential for combining voice and data services together and gaining greater reliability.
