...felt the need for a little Tuesday morning rant :). I do find them rather cathartic and it is always nice to spark a good debate.
On a more serious note: I am certainly not advocating that we all pay 1% of tax on our income (though as you point out it would be rather pleasant) and I will always be grateful for the provision of services that we receive as from our tax £'s .
However, I do take umbridge with the way the press have taken what is a serious and weighty issue as it relates to our tax laws, the intrepretation of those and the effect on our country's coffers.... and turned it into a witch hunt as regards the supposed moral judgement of one individual.
By chosing to use a % in reporting on this issue rather than values the "man in the street" is given the impression that poor old Jimmy had paid about tuppence happ'ny in tax which I would truely hope is not the reality.
It then goes from the insane to the ridiculous....with headlines reported of "Jimmy Carr inspires 1000 to walk out" http://tyneandwear.sky.com/news/article/23577. All I can say to this is " REALLY"!!
In the end though all I can do ( as I sit here gazing at the 1000's of pages in my tolleys Handbooks) is
be grateful that I have a leve of understanding that means "I do not have to believe everything I read in the press".await the next set of tolley's guides hitting the door mat - no doubt they will be even bigger than last year as the " tax simplification" continues andcontinue to have a "little daily rant on a-web"
oh! - and pay my taxes....At full rate of course LOL.
P.S @justsotax.... if you have details of that SDLT scheme do please share - though let's not call it a scheme - more of a commercial land related transaction. I am sure HMRC will never notice ;)
Putting aside tax avoidance, evasion or planning.... my concern is that Labour MP Michael Meacher's proposed bill seems to be intent on changing the basis of our legal system from "innocent until proven guilty" to " guilty until YOU can prove your self innocent".
A dangerous principle to set - I am sure you will agree??

All the focus is on personal tax..! - There is a bigger picture
You do have to love the press and their slant on thing!
As I note no one is commenting that Mr Carr ( and many other affluent business people):
1) have houses in the UK which they paid millions for
[ SDLT on £8m house @ 7% = £560,000]
2) Do run companies and will pay ER's NI
[say 10 employees average salary £30,000 @ 13.8%= £41,400]
3) run expensive cars, furnish said properties plus live a luxurious life style
[ lets say £1m per annum expenses @ 20% VAT = £200,000]
So Poor HMRC- Mr Carr has contributed £801,400 to your coffers in the last year ..... and you are STILL not happy!
Keep this up and all the wealthy individuals in the UK will ( as in previous decades) move out... and where will we be then!
( an unless my arithmetic skills have failed me 1% of something and always will be greater than 50% of ZERO)
Now we are - Guilty until proven innocent!
