You are probably of an age when you learned about the court case when the judge ruled that auditors were a watchdog not a bloddhound. In my time in auditing in the 1970's we joked that auditors had become greyhounds, they have now morphed into lapdogs

With reference to another thread about unaffiliated tax agents, were KPMG affiliated (hah) what were their compliance visits like ? Bet the proceedures were spot on . One has to laugh

i was an ICAEW member for 43 years before resigning but continuing for a further 5/6 years in practice as I wound down to retiremnt. I was paying fees of about £600 for no perceived benefit, I continued PII insrance and still pay for run off cover, I kept up to date with CPD. I had one compliance visit about 15 yras ago which lasted a day and focused on my systems and proceedures with only a quick glance at one file, what a waste of time that was. I dont think being a member of ICAEW did me or my cliemts any good but I did feel towards the end that they could do me more harm than good

I resigned as a member of the ICAEW about 3 years ago when I started to slowly wind down my business. What a relief it was. Mortgage applications have been dealt with when required, maybe not as easy as when I was a member but still sorted.
No more worrying about falling foul of the PB and getting a disproportionate penalty. I felt that the ICAEW was a club for partners of the big firms paid for by the rest of us

Bad news for Taxfiler users like me.
I used to use PAYEmaster and Keytime prior to Iris buying them, service went down and prices shot up substantially, so I suppose the same will happen here. This plus MTD might finally push me into retirement

No amount of auditing and beautiful audit files have prevented any of the recent big corporate failures. Auditors will defend their positions by claiming that preventing corporate failure is not their job. Strikes me that audit of major PLC''s is as much use as polishing the bell on the Titanic after it hit the iceberg.
There is no reprimand which can hurt the big 4 in as proportionate a way as the hefty fines imposed on the small guys. Very pleased I resigned my membership of the ICAEW a couple of years ago, it felt very empowering

That can't possibly be right, because I went to a cloud accounting presentation last year which said that practices were going to be selling on 3x GRF. ;-)

regarding CIS Subcontractors, HMRC already receive details of their earnings through the CIS reporting system so will it be expected that they only file details of their expenses through MTD ? could be fun with non cash expenses such as mileage.I was going to retire this year but I may stay on longer to monitor this fiasco
